Resources and Support for the LGBTQ+ Community at Insight

Around 3 million LGBTQ+ adults are over age 50, and those that receive a dementia diagnosis face a particularly challenging set of circumstances. Many, including care partners, face disproportionately high levels of social isolation and stigmatization as they age, making it difficult to find support. The LGBTQ+ community may additionally face particular challenges related to Alzheimer's and dementia. These include finding inclusive and welcoming health care providers, less ability to call upon adult children for assistance, concerns about stigma and higher rates of poverty and social isolation. At Insight, we understand how these challenges impact both individuals with a dementia diagnosis and their care partners and families alike. Learn more about the services we offer as well as other national and local resources we have put together.

Insight Memory Care Center is certified Platinum by SageCare, demonstrating a strong commitment to creating safe, positive environments for LGBTQ+ aging adults, recognized as "Champions for Accountability," a collaborative effort between the northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce Foundation for commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and also partners with Equality Loudoun to create safe spaces for our LGBTQ+ community in Loudoun County. Equality Allies is a community partnership program that encourages voices of support in the places throughout the community.

Upcoming! Pride Month Virtual Presentation

June 26, 2024 7:00 pm EST
Who’s In Your Circle? will look at the importance of creating social circles in the LGBTQ community while navigating dementia. Being LGBTQ and living with dementia and/or caring for someone with dementia brings many unique challenges to the journey. Join us to discuss the importance of creating social circles of support and strategies for doing so. We will also identify community resources to support caring for someone living with dementia.

Presenter: Carey Candrian, PhD (she/her)
Carey is an associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Carey’s research examines how communication affects outcomes in healthcare -- and specifically how it impacts older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) adults, and those who care for them. She has spent much of her career investigating how healthcare suffers when patients aren’t able to be open with medical professionals about who and what matters most to them. Ultimately her goal is to effect change in communication systems and at the policy level so that older LGBT adults receive the support they and their loved ones want, when they need it most.

Please register and you will receive Zoom information prior to the class.
