Receiving any diagnosis will more than likely create some level of anxiety. However, if that diagnosis is one relating to dementia, then a unique batch of worries arises. Important questions begin to race through the mind, such as, “What’s going to happen to me?” or “Is my independence going to be taken away from me?” In these instances, there aren’t a ton of dementia specific resources immediately available for someone in this position to take advantage of. Insight can help fill that void and help ease the burden of going through this process.
Insight Memory Care Center (IMCC) has a variety of programs aimed specifically at helping those with the diagnosis, and/or their loved ones, gain the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the labyrinth of dementia care.
If the individual with the diagnosis wants to talk with and hear from other people who share their struggles in a safe and confidential environment, then the Making Connections at Insight (MCI) Support Group is a terrific option for them. This group can be a wonderful outlet for people new to the diagnosis to meet others going through the same difficulties and receive advice on how they’ve managed.
An option for those who want a more lighthearted group that they can attend with their family members is the Memory Café. These sessions combine the support group atmosphere with fun activities and presentations. You are open to use the Memory Café sessions anyway you would find beneficial to you. Would you like to take your mind off everything and just enjoy pleasant conversation and activities? This is the perfect choice for you! Or, would you like to be able to talk with people who will understand your concerns and struggles in an environment that is not as serious and heavy as a support group? You are more than welcome to do that as well!
Not every service that Insight offers comes in the form of a group. We want those who come to Insight to feel as if this is their second home. That is why we put so much care and effort into making sure you feel welcomed when you arrive here. Maybe you’re having a tough day and just want someone to vent to? We want you to feel as though any one of our IMCC staff could be that person. Scheduled individual counseling sessions are available, but we also want you to know that we’re around if you need us at any time. Our doors are always open, and we’re more than willing to lend you an ear and some kind words.
The benefits of the programs mentioned here cannot be understated. Going through the hardships of dementia alone is an extremely stressful and difficult undertaking. Taking advantage of one or more of the services offered by IMCC is highly recommended by both our staff and our participants. Several people have reported that after coming to some of our programs that both their loved one and themselves have felt less anxiety and feel more prepared for the future. Whether you attend every possible session, or just a couple here and there, the positive effects of the socialization and education that IMCC offers through its programs are incredibly helpful.
Every person that receives a diagnosis relating to dementia goes through the process differently. A common saying around IMCC is, “If you’ve met one person with dementia, then you’ve met ONE person with dementia.” This phrase does a great job at encapsulating how we view and serve those who come to our center. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to dementia care and we here at IMCC are doing our best to create as many programs and opportunities that will help as many people as possible. The groups mentioned here are only a small sample of what IMCC has to offer and we are working every day to expand and improve our programs for you!
