As we try to ride out the tropical storm this week, Insight is here to help with more things to do at home! We’ll be sharing some ideas each week, adapted from the Best Friends Approach to Care. Some may be more or less appropriate depending on your loved one’s abilities and interests, but here are a few more ideas to try this week!
- Roll coins
Find all your hiding spots and pull out your loose change! Roll coins to deposit later, try to guess how many or how much of each type you have, talk about things you used to buy for a quarter, a dime, etc. - Play a game of Pictionary
With a little scrap paper and a pencil you can play a fun game of Pictionary! Write out items to pull from a hat beforehand, or just pick a theme and take turns drawing and guessing! - Identify states and capitals
Find an old map, globe, or a picture online, and see who can name the states, countries or continents. Reminisce about places you’ve been, or places still to see on your wish list! - Make homemade ice cream
Beat the summer heat with a favorite treat! Here’s a recipe you can make without an ice cream machine, and ideas for different flavors to try! - Write a letter to a friend or family member
We all still love getting mail, especially a card from a friend. Send someone a note to say you’re thinking of them. You can even get extra creative by making the card too! - Pop popcorn!
Pick a favorite old movie, pop some popcorn and enjoy a fun movie night. Or make it an afternoon matinee with a movie and a sequel! - Make shapes out of play-doh
If you don’t have any around, you can also make your own. If you didn’t use up all of your Pictionary ideas, use the play-doh as a fun way to finish the game with sculptures!
